The Lennart Karl Hype: Why Everyone is Chasing a 17-Year-Old (and Why I’m Not Buying It)

If you’ve been scrolling through soccer card Twitter or checking eBay sold listings lately, one name is popping up everywhere: Lennart Karl. The kid has been on an absolute tear for Bayern Munich. At just 17, he’s already broken Jamal Musiala’s record as the youngest Bayern scorer in Champions League history and recently became the youngest player ever to score in three consecutive UCL matches. He’s currently the "it" prospect of the hobby, and his card prices are reflecting that.

But while the market is going crazy, I’m looking at this with a massive dose of skepticism. Here’s the breakdown of the player, the cards, and why I’m hesitant to go all-in on another German "wonderkid."

The Cards: Where the Money is Flowing

Topps has timed his hobby arrival perfectly. If you’re looking to get in on the Karl craze, these are the three key items driving the market right now:

  • 2024-25 Topps Chrome UEFA "1st Bowman" (#BU-LK): This is the one everyone is fighting over. It’s his first major licensed appearance in a premium set. Raw copies are moving for $30–$60, but high-grade parallels are where the real insanity is happening. A PSA 10 Gold Refractor recently sold for $3,264.47 on December 21st, and low-numbered "Auto-Refractors" are already hitting four-figure territory.

  • 2025-26 Topps NOW (Card #6): Topps released this to commemorate his record-breaking Champions League run. With a print run of 3,009, it’s not rare, but it’s a cheap way to own a piece of his "rookie season" history.

The "German Ceiling": Why History Says Be Careful

The stats are undeniable—6 goals in 21 appearances for a teenager at Bayern is world-class. However, as collectors, we’ve seen this movie before.

My biggest issue? He’s a German playing in the Bundesliga. History tells us that German stars have a very hard time maintaining "hobby legend" status once they leave the comforts of the Bundesliga—especially if they don't head to England. Think about the "Wonderkids" of the last decade. We’ve had dozens of them, but very few actually become global icons that hold card value.

Mesut Özil and Toni Kroos are the exceptions. But look at what it took: Özil had to become the assist king for Real Madrid and Arsenal, and Kroos had to win five Champions Leagues. They are the 1%.

For every Kroos, there are five players like Mario Götze, Julian Draxler, or even Kai Havertz and Timo Werner, who struggled to replicate their domestic dominance on the world stage. If Karl stays at Bayern his whole career, he’ll be a legend in Munich, but his card prices will likely plateau. If he leaves for a team like Real Madrid or Manchester City (who are reportedly scouting him), he has a chance—but the odds of a German player becoming a global "Top 5" hobby icon are historically slim.

The Verdict: Flip or Hold?

Right now, Lennart Karl is in the "Peak Hype" phase. Every goal he scores in the Champions League adds another 20% to his 1st Bowman price.

  • If you pulled one: Honestly? Sell the hype. We are 18 months away from the 2026 World Cup, and a lot can happen.

  • If you’re buying: Be careful. You’re buying at the top of a very steep hill. Unless he leads Germany to a World Cup trophy or wins a Ballon d'Or at Real Madrid, these $3,000+ parallel prices are hard to justify long-term.
